Dr. Christian Stocks
Consul General, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany
Christian Stocks was born in Preetz, Schleswig-Holstein in 1947.
He studied Political Science, History, Art History and Political
Law at the Universities of Kiel and Heidelberg in Germany and
at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, France. He continued
his post-graduate studies at the Universities of Harvard, Essex and
Michigan (Ann Arbor) and received his Ph.D. in 1976 from the
University of Kiel. His doctoral thesis dealt with electoral voting
behavior.
In 1977, he joined the German Foreign Service. His first foreign posting was to Madrid followed by three years in Bonn as speech
writer for the Federal President. In 1985, he became Deputy Consul
General in Mumbay, India and then served as Counselor for Political
Affairs at the German Embassy in London from 1987 to 1990.
Afterwards, he returned to the Foreign Office and headed the
training department for career diplomats at the German Foreign
Office’s Diplomatic School. In 1991, he was asked to serve as
Foreign Policy Advisor to the CDU/CSU parliamentary group of
the German Bundestag. In 1995, he went on to become head of
the Political Department at the German Embassy in Madrid.
In 2000, he was appointed as Director General of Foreign Affairs
for the Governing Mayor’s office and Chief of Protocol for the State
and City of Berlin.
He took up the posting as Consul General of Los Angeles in July, 2005.
Christian Stocks is married and has one son.
