Markku Kauppinen

Before his current position in Washington Mr. Markku Kauppinen was Ambassador for Trade and Development at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Helsinki from 2007 to 2010 and from 2003 to 2007 as the Ambassador of Finland in Mozambique being also in charge of Angola, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.
He has held several posts in Foreign Service since 1973. Mr. Kauppinen was the Deputy Director for Cooperation with Neighbouring Regions from 1997-1999, and Director from 2000-2003. In 1999 he worked six months as Minister-Counselor at the Embassy of Finland in Tokyo in charge of Trade Policy during the first EU-Chairmanship of Finland. From 1993 to 1997, he worked at the Embassy of Finland in Beijing as Minister – Counselor and DCM in charge of Political and Economic Affairs. From 1990 to 1993 was Minister – Counselor and DCM at the Embassy of Finland in Prague and before that (1988-1990) as Counselor at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. He was the Head of Export Promotion at the Ministry from 1986 to 1988. His first posting from 1981 to 1986 was in Dublin as Commercial Counselor and Head of Mission of the Embassy of Finland. In 1973 he was appointed as the Administration Officer until 1978 when he became Head of Purchase Division at the Ministry.
Mr. Kauppinen holds a Master's degree in Economic Sciences from the Helsinki School of Economics.
