Jennifer Yanni is a Regents Scholar and second-year student
at the University of California - Irvine. Upon completion of her
degree, she plans to attend law school and study international
law with a focus on the role that intellectual property rights
play in bridging the gap between developed and developing
nations. She ultimately hopes to work for the United Nations or
the U.S. State Department, either in the area of international
governance or as a Middle East policy analyst.
“Although I didn’t know much about IPR, I was excited,
nonetheless, because the conference seemed to coincide with my
interest in international affairs and previous Model United
Nations experience. While at the forum, I was fascinated by
the speakers and students who attended. Not only was I one of
the youngest students, but I was by far the least experienced
with respect to IPR.
I was selected to represent my group on the panel and,
though extremely nervous, was excited to take on the
responsibility. Not only was I forced to be analytical in my
thinking and my responses, but it taught me the validity of
others’ arguments. It strengthened my interest in attending law
school and showed me that I could combine my interests in law
and international affairs. The research that I conducted for my
final paper allowed me the opportunity to learn more about IPR,
which has proven invaluable in my undergraduate research.
Moreover, my time as a panelist strengthened my interest in
public-speaking. Overall, the forum wet my appetite in the
subject of IPR and opened my eyes to a new dimension of
international affairs.”
