At the time of the NYC Athgo forum, Robert Murray was in
the process of completing his M.A. degree in International
Relations and incorporated elements of what he had learned in NY
with previous research on the topic of UN reform to complete his
degree. Since the conference, Murray’s has focused on the need
for UN reform, and his work has led him to look at the
philosophical and theoretical foundations of the UN. He believes
that what is first necessary is a change in the theoretical
approach to the organization before discussing structural
change.
Murray’s work examines the organization’s epistemological
underpinnings, specifically in its response to humanitarian
crises. He looks to 18th century philosophy (especially Jean
Jacques Rousseau), as well as the current work of Ingrid Makus,
in identifying a dichotomy between notions of active and passive
pity. Analyzing what motivates people to act empathetically, he
has attempted to understand the construction of UN humanitarian
policies. Murray’s Ph.D studies will continue to address how the
UN is involved in global outcomes, and how possible reforms to
the UN might aid in improving the notions of international
security at the human level.
“Perhaps the greatest benefit of my Athgo experience was
the networking opportunity the conference presented. The ability
to meet people from around the world, and discuss ideas, is
always something which can only benefit the topic of UN reform."
