Tony Coelho Tony Coelho
United States Congressman, Ret.

A founding member of the UC Merced Foundation Board of Trustees, Tony Coelho began his career in 1965 as a legislative assistant to Congressman Bernie Sisk before being promoted to serve as his chief of staff from 1971 to 1977. Upon Sisk's retirement, Coelho was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 1981 to 1986 and then as the first elected Majority Whip from 1987 to 1989. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1964 from Loyola Marymount University, where he served as student body president, and has been granted honorary doctoral degrees from Loyola Marymount University, Santa Clara University, and the Universidade Nova De Lisboa in Portugal.
